About Scalp Acne Pimples

By: La Hunter

Scalp acne, or acne folliculitis, is an infection of hair follicles on the the scalp. Symptoms include pimples, or bumps that form around hair follicles on the head, accompanied by severe itching. Outbreaks of scalp acne generally appear along the forehead hairline, behind the ears, or in the hairline at the back of the neck, although it can also affect other parts of the scalp resulting in some hair loss, which may be permanent. The folliculitis condition, can affect other areas of the body that have a heavy growth of hair, such as the face, chest or groin.

The condition results in the inflammation of hair follicles, caused by an infection of bacteria or organism that attacks damaged or clogged follicles. Damage can be caused by wearing an ill fitting hat, a tight headband, exposure to creosote fumes, excessive sweating or a scalp wound. Clogged follicles can be caused by excessively oily skin, which prevents dead skin cells from shedding naturally. The dead cells eventually clog the pores, allowing bacteria to infect the area and cause acne pimples to form.

Although, this type of acne may be mostly covered from view by hair, it is none the less annoying, as it itches constantly, and it is difficult for most sufferers to refrain from scratching the area. Of course, scratching will only exacerbate the condition, so it is imperative to treat the condition effectively, in order to suppress the urge to scratch. Salicylic acid is a good choice for easing the symptoms of scalp acne, simply use a cotton bud to apply a few drops of the preparation onto each affected area. Be careful not to use any preparation containing benzoyl peroxide, even though it may control your acne outbreak, it will also bleach any hair that it comes into contact with.

Some anti dandruff shampoos can ease scalp acne, as these preparations are designed to treat fungal or yeast infections. Shampoos containing the keratolytic ingredient, salicylic acid are particularly beneficial, as salicylic acid reduces the production of skin cells, which in turn reduces the number of dead cells, allowing blocked skin pores to clear and eliminate the infection.

There is also a severe form of scalp folliculitis and, although it does affect some Caucasians, the disorder mainly affects dark skinned men. The condition causes large inflamed nodules that contain matter to form on the scalp. The larger cysts occasionally break open and form scabs that result in bald patches, which often remain permanently bald. This type of condition however is quite rare.

If you have a severe case of scalp acne that refuses to clear up, then you should consult a dermatologist, who can prescribe the proper medication for your condition. You should also adopt a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, fresh air, correct diet and plenty of fresh water.
