Acne Outbreaks During Pregnancy
By: La HunterAcne, is a widespread skin complaint that affects more than eighty percent of people, from most parts of the world. It can strike persons of either gender, of any race or color, and can attack all age groups, although it is most common among teenagers. Outbreaks can range from an odd pimple, to massive patches of cysts, nodules and sores that cover the face, neck, shoulders, back and arms. An acne bout can have a negative impact on a person's lifestyle, however, there are many topical, skin care treatments available that are quite effective in controlling mild cases of the disorder.
During a woman's pregnancy, an acne outbreak can be quite devastating, as this can not only result in ugly, painful cysts and pimples, it can also severely limit available treatment options, for fear of causing damage to the unborn baby. Any outbreak, other than a very minor one, should be treated by a dermatologist, and even then, the number of prescribed medications is limited. Pregnancy is a very delicate condition, and drugs of any kind should be avoided, whenever possible.
Pregnant women are well advised to refrain from any hormonal therapy, as a number of preparations of this type contain compounds that are harmful to both the mother and fetus. Retinoids, particularly isotretinoin, are potentially dangerous for an unborn baby, and can result in birth deformities or even stillbirths.
Accutane, one of the popular brand names for isotretinoin, would certainly not be prescribed to an expectant mom by a qualified dermatologist. In fact, a prerequisite of receiving this type of drug is to undertake a pregnancy test and sign a declaration, stating that the patient will adopt two forms of birth control during the course of the treatment.
However, there may be an illegal means of supply available, and all women should be warned not to take any compound containing isotretinoin immediately before falling pregnant, during confinement or while breast feeding after giving birth. This drug can, and has, caused horrific birth defects, so avoid it at all costs.
Antibiotic preparations, such as tetracycline, which is branded as Achromycin or Sumycin, should also be avoided during pregnancy, as they can inhibit the bone growth of the fetus. Nursing mothers should not take this type of antibiotic, as it can pass into the breast milk affecting the bone growth of the infant, and cause tooth discoloration.
There are a number of natural, herbal skin care products available that effectively control acne outbreaks safely. Expectant moms, suffering from bouts of acne, should pay a visit to the local health food store, and discover the range of natural herbs that can be used as a topical remedy for the disorder.
